The European Commission has presented its new “Vision 2040 for Fisheries and Aquaculture”, setting the European direction for the next 15 years. The aim is to develop a sustainable, resilient, competitive and innovative sector that protects marine resources while supporting the communities that depend on them.
The Vision focuses on protecting aquatic ecosystems, the energy transition, strengthening the resilience of supply chains, supporting producers and access to funding, fostering innovation, and promoting European fisheries and aquaculture products. At the same time, it includes measures to support generational renewal and attract young people to the sector.
For the Ionian Islands, a predominantly island and coastal region, this European perspective is of particular importance. The sustainability of marine ecosystems, support for small-scale fisheries, innovation and the creation of opportunities for younger generations are directly linked to the future of coastal communities and to preserving their close relationship with the sea.
The European Commission stresses that the future of the sector depends on healthy seas and economically sustainable activities, so that fisheries and aquaculture can continue to provide food, jobs and economic activity in Europe’s coastal regions.
