From 16 to 22 September, European Mobility Week is once again taking place across Europe. It is the European Commission’s flagship campaign promoting sustainable urban mobility. Its aim is to encourage cities, organisations and citizens to explore cleaner, safer, more accessible and more sustainable ways of getting around.

This year’s theme is “Mobility for Everyone”, with a particular focus on intergenerational fairness. The campaign highlights the need for transport systems that respond to the needs of people of all ages and remain accessible regardless of income, place of residence, gender or ability.

What does this mean in everyday life?

Sustainable mobility is not only about major transport infrastructure. It is also about the way we travel every day to work, school, university, shops and public services.

Walking or cycling more often, making better use of public transport, creating safer streets and more accessible public spaces, and reducing dependence on private cars can all contribute to cleaner air, less noise, greater road safety and a better quality of life.

From a car-free day to lasting change

During European Mobility Week, activities are organised across Europe, including walking and cycling events, educational activities for schoolchildren, sports initiatives, events in public spaces and Car-Free Days. At the same time, many cities use the week as an opportunity to test or launch permanent measures, such as new cycling infrastructure and lower-speed zones.

Participation in the campaign has grown significantly. In 2025, more than 2,700 cities and towns took part, while over 900 organisations registered sustainable mobility actions.

European Mobility Week therefore demonstrates that changes in everyday travel can begin with small, local initiatives while forming part of a broader European effort to create more sustainable, accessible and inclusive cities.

As European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas stressed at the launch of this year’s European Mobility Week, mobility should work for everyone, through accessible, affordable and reliable solutions that connect people of all ages with the services they need, with places of study and work, and with one another.
